The most popular and breathtakingly scenic path to Uhuru Peak, nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for its challenging yet rewarding terrain.

Approaching from the southwest, the Machame Route is renowned for its stunning variety of landscapes — from lush rainforest to dramatic moorland, alpine desert, and the iconic Barranco Wall. All nights are spent camping in high-quality tents, offering an immersive wilderness experience.

Total distance: approximately 62 km (38 miles) round trip, with daily hikes of 5–9 hours and excellent "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization.

Key Advantages

  • Stunning scenic diversity — often called the most beautiful route
  • Excellent acclimatization profile ("climb high, sleep low")
  • Very high summit success rate on 7-day itinerary
  • Iconic features like Barranco Wall and Lava Tower
  • Immersive camping experience under the stars

Important Considerations

  • Requires camping (tents provided, but more rugged than huts)
  • Steeper and more physically demanding than Marangu
  • Popular route — can be busy during peak seasons
  • 6-day version has lower success rate (~75–85%)

Our Strong Recommendation

Choose the 7-day Machame Route for an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Valley. This dramatically improves comfort, reduces altitude sickness risk, and boosts summit success to 85–95%. It’s the most rewarding and safest choice for the majority of climbers.
