Marangu Route: Kilimanjaro's Classic "Coca-Cola" Trail

The oldest and most popular path to Uhuru Peak, nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route" for its hut comforts and occasional cold drinks along the way.

Approaching from the southeast, the Marangu Route is the only trail offering permanent dormitory-style hut accommodation — complete with beds, dining areas, and solar lighting. No camping required, making it significantly more comfortable, especially during rain or cold nights.

You'll journey through lush rainforest, giant heather moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone. Total distance: approximately 72 km (45 miles) round trip, with daily hikes of 4–8 hours.

Success Rate (6-day)

70–80%

Key Advantages

  • Hut accommodation – sleep in real beds, no tent setup
  • Well-maintained, gradual paths – easier on the legs
  • Shortest timeline options – perfect for limited schedules
  • Most budget-friendly route on Kilimanjaro
  • Direct ascent/descent on the same scenic trail

Important Considerations

  • Faster ascent profile → lower success rate on 5-day version (~50–60%)
  • Less scenic diversity than western routes (Lemosho/Machame)
  • More crowded during peak seasons
  • 5-day itinerary not recommended due to altitude risks

Our Strong Recommendation

Choose the 6-day Marangu Route for an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720 m). This significantly improves comfort, reduces the risk of altitude sickness, and increases summit success to 70–80%. It’s the safer, smarter, and more enjoyable option for most climbers.

No. Marangu is the only route with permanent dormitory-style huts that provide beds, mattresses, dining areas, and solar lighting. You only need your personal clothing and daypack.

As the most popular route, it can be busier than others, especially in peak seasons (January–March and June–October). However, the huts have ample space, and our groups are kept small for a better experience.

The dry seasons offer the best conditions: January to mid-March and June to October. These months provide clearer skies, better views, and safer trails.
